SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – In their first dual meet of the season, the MIT wommen's swimming and diving team earned an impressive 211-88 victory over Springfield College on Saturday afternoon in the Art Linkletter Natatorium. Competing in 16 events, the Cardinal and Gray record 13 first place performances.
Tech commenced the meet with a first place performance in the 400 Yard Medley. Senior Emmie Ryan (Avon, Ind.), junior Sarah Osmulski (Rumson, N.J.), sophomore Veronika Jedryka (Arlington Heights, Ill.) and freshman Jessica Chen (Rockville, Md.) collaborated for a time of 3.58.18, edging out the Cardinal and Gray's second team – made up of senior Jane He (Yardley, Pa.), sophomore Teresa de Figueiredo (College Station, Texas) and freshmen Joanna Han (Marlboro, N.J.) and Amanda Wu (Cedar Park, Texas), which finished with an overall time of 4.03.85.
MIT's early momentum continued over the next few events, resulting in first place finishes in the 1000 Yard Freestyle, 200 Yard Freestyle and 100 Yard Backstroke. Springfield sophomore Emily Medeiros (Wakefield, Mass.) claimed the top spot in the 100 Yard Breaststroke with a time of 1.08.62 – the ninth event of the meet – edging Chen by roughly one-tenth of a second. Chen finished with an overall time of 1.08.73, while Han placed third with a time of 1.10.37.
Tech earned a first place finish in their next event – the 200 Yard Butterfly – thanks to de Figueiredo, who registered a time of 2.10.17. Osmulski finished second with a time of 2.12.53, while sophomore Madeleine Severance (Brookfield, Wis.) placed third with a time of 2.15.04.
Springfield captured the 1 Meter Diving competition with first and second place performances, but freshman Andrea Meister (Nov, Mich.) finished third with an overall score of 215.55. Meister also placed third in the 3 Meter Diving with a score of 220.05., while classmate Christina Tournant (Seminole, Fla.) finished fourth with a score of 186.16.
MIT wrapped up the meet with strong performances in the 200 Yard IM and 400 Yard Freestyle. Wu led the Engineers to a first-place finish in the 200 Yard IM with an overall time of 2.11.22. Ryan, Jedryka, juniors Lena Yang (East Stroudsburg, Pa.) and Katherine Yu (San Jose, Calif.) guided the Engineers to their final first place performance in the 400 Yard Freestyle Relay with an overall time of 3.38.22.
MIT returns to the pool on November 22 when they host Babson College and Bowdoin College at 1:00 p.m.
