MIT Women's Swimming and Diving Competes in Second Day of the MIT Winter Invite

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – After a successful first night of the MIT Winter Invitational, the women's swimming and diving team continued their momentum on Saturday in both the morning and afternoon session. Numerous swimmers and relay teams concluded their heats with NCAA B cuts, while some broke school or pool records.

Beginning in the 200 yard freestyle relay, juniors Sarah Osmulski (Rumson, N.J.) and Lena Yang (East Stroudsburg, Pa. ), sophomore Veronika Jedryka (Arlington Heights, Ill.) and freshman Amanda Wu (Cedar Park, Texas) earned a B cut with an overall time of 1:34.31. The team finished first in the event, defeating the Engineers' second unit by roughly two seconds.

In the 200 yard butterfly, sophomore Teresa de Figueiredo (College Station, Texas) finished third with a finals time 2.10.84. She secured a B cut during the preliminary round with a time of 2.06.15, while Osmulski recorded a B cut in the same round in 2.07.61. 

Senior Emmie Ryan (Avon, Ind.), who finished second in the 200 yard freestyle, earned a B cut with an overall time of 1.57.87. Junior Sarah Wilson (Westerville, Ohio) also had a strong showing in the same event, earning a second place finish in the second heat with a time of 1.59.90.

In the 100 yard breaststroke, freshmen Jessica Chen (Rockville, Md.) and Wu placed first and second, respectively. Chen (1.04.88) and Wu (1.05.38) also earned B cuts, too.

Jedryka placed first in the 100 yard backstroke, clocking a time of 55.73. She not only earned a B cut, but also established a new program record in the event.

In the 400 yard IM, freshmen Mary Thielking (Fishers, Ind.) and Joanna Han (Marlboro, N.J.) each earned B cuts, while finishing first and second, respectively. Thielking clocked a time of 4.30.91, while Han notched a time of 4.31.20.

Yang and Jedryka each earned B cuts in the 50 yard freestyle.Yang finished in 23.85, finishing second in the event, and Jedryka, who led off the 200 yard freestyle relay split a time of 23.58. 

In the 400 yard medley relay, Jedryka, Chen, Osmulski and Yang combined for a first place finish, clocking a time of 3.50.53. The team earned a B cut, and Jedryka re-broke a school record in the backstroke with a time of 55.42.

Tech returns to the pool tomorrow for the final day of the MIT Winter Invitational. The first session is scheduled to commence at 10:30 a.m., while the final session begins at 6:00 p.m.
