MIT Women's Swimming and Diving Captures Winter Invite

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Competing in the final day of the MIT Winter Invitational, the Engineers' women's swimming and diving team wrapped up the three day event with strong performances, both in the morning and evening. Tech captured the invite, earning first place with an overall score of 1,535 points, while Wellesley College (703) finished second and SUNY New Paltz (672) placed third.

Sophomore Veronika Jedryka (Arlington Heights, Ill.) captured the 200 yard backstroke, placing first with an overall time of 1.59.17. Her time – an NCAA B cut – established a new program record. She also broke the school record in the 50 yard backstroke during MIT's first place performance in the 200 medley relay. She broke the school record during the 100 yard freestyle in prelims with a new school record of 51.15. Jedryka, who broke her third school record, led of the 200 medley relay with a time of 26.63. Freshman Jessica Chen (Rockville, Md.), and juniors Margaret Guo (San Diego, Calif.) and Lena Yang (East Stroudsburg, Pa.)continued the momentum by combining for a time of 1.45.66, a B cut.

In the 500 yard freestyle, senior Emmie Ryan (Avon, Ind. ) and freshman Mary Thielking (Fishers, Ind.) each earned B cuts. Ryan clocked a time of 5.00.25, while Thielking finished the event in 4.59.64. Ryan also earned a B cut in the 100 yard freestyle with an overall time of 51.28, and Guo placed third in the 100 yard butterfly, earning a B cut with a time of 57.16.

In the 200 yard breaststroke, sophomore Emily Tsang (Mountain Lakes, N.J. ), Chen and freshman Joanna Han (Marlboro, N.J.) each earned B cuts. Chen, who placed first in the event and broke the school recorded, clocked a time of 2.21.48 in the prelims, Han (2.22.93) finished second and Tsang (2.24.59/evening session) registered a third place performance. Tsnag touched the wall in 2.22.90 during the prelims, which secured her a B cut. 

Jedryka, Yang, Ryan and freshman Amanda Wu (Cedar Park, Texas) combined for a first place performance in the 400 yard freestyle relay. The team finished with a time of 3.29.37, earning a B cut.

MIT returns to the pool on Saturday, January 10 when they travel to the U.S. Coast Guard Academy for a 12:00 p.m. meet.
