Box Score 2 CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – A two-out single by junior Parker Tew (Chapel Hill, N.C.) in the bottom of 12th inning scored freshman John Drago (Peoria, Ariz.) with the winning run that gave MIT a 6-5 win over the U.S. Coast Guard Academy that completed a doubleheader sweep. The Engineers took the opening game, 3-2, over the Bears as both teams opened New England Women's and Men's Athletic (NEWMAC) play this afternoon.
Tew's hit gave the victory to sophomore Alan Wang (Paoli, Pa.) who tossed three scoreless innings in relief. He allowed just two hits and a walk while striking out five to improve to 2-0 on the season. Freshman David Hesslink (San Diego, Calif.) started for MIT (4-2, 2-0 NEWMAC) and had a solid outing, going six innings and allowing just three hits and three unearned runs while striking out five.
Coast Guard (4-8, 0-2 NEWMAC) forced the game into extra innings in the bottom of the ninth when a one-out walk and an error put two on for the Bears. Junior Blake Thompson (Liberty Hill, Texas) doubled to bring in one run and junior Dan Sabourin (St. Paul, Minn.) tied it up with an RBI ground out to send it to extra innings.
Coast Guard got on the board in the first inning with an unearned run, but MIT bounced back in the bottom half of the frame with a two-out rally. A double by sophomore Nate Rodman (Corvallis, Ore.) started the uprising, with junior Hayden Cornwell (Newport Beach, Calif.) bringing Rodman home with a single. A stolen base and a walk put two on for senior Patrick Dayton (Archer City, Texas) who delivered an RBI single. Dayton and sophomore Kendall Helbert (St. Louis, Mo.) then pulled off a double steal, with Kendall scoring the third run of the inning.
The Engineers added an unearned run in the second to make it 4-1. It stayed that way until the sixth when Coast Guard took advantage of a passed ball and a pair of errors to score twice, getting an RBI single from sophomore Mark Behne (Clifton, Va.) and an RBI ground out off the bat of sophomore Kyle Wood (Mt. Juliet, Tenn.). MIT added a run in the seventh on run-scoring single by senior Creed Mangrum (Sandy, Utah), but the Bears came back with their ninth inning rally to send the game into extra innings.
In game one sophomore Nicholas Locascio (Naples, Fla.) started for MIT and picked up the win for the Engineers, allowing five hits and a pair of runs over seven innings while striking out nine. MIT picked up its first two runs without the benefit of a hit, with Tew scoring an unearned run in the first on fielder's choice play after reaching by being hit by a pitch, and senior Jon Rea (Palo Alto, Calif.) delivering a sac fly in the second. The Engineers picked up what proved to be the winning run in the fourth when Drago led off with a single, moved to third on a wild pitch, and came home on a single by junior Karl Sorensen (Blacksburg, Va.).
Locascio's only rough inning came in the sixth when sophomore Ed Lazowski (Mount Joy, Pa.) led off with a single before Sabourin and Thompson followed with back-to-back run scoring doubles to make it a one run game. That was it for the Bears, however, as Locascio set down the next six hitters in order and senior Brandon Lowe (Brier, Wash.) and sophomore Michael Wymer (Flower Mound, Texas) finished things off, with Wymer picking up the save with 1.2 innings of hitless work.
Mangrum had four hits in 11 trips over the two games, scoring once and driving in one while Thompson and Sabourin both had a pair of hits and two RBI on the day for Coast Guard.
MIT will host Springfield College in another NEWMAC contest in its next outing, taking on the Pride on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. Coast Guard will also stay in conference in its next game, playing at Babson College on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
