Big First Inning Helps Carry MIT Past WPI, 12-7

Box Score

WORCESTER, Mass. – Fueled by a pair of five-run innings, the MIT baseball team reached double figures in runs for the fourth straight game as it took a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) contest against WPI, 12-7. Senior Sean Karson (Orland, Fla.) had a pair of hits and drove in three runs, while junior K.J. Parent (Knoxville, Tenn.) picked up the win with seven solid innings on the mound for the Engineers.

MIT (11-6, 8-2 NEWMAC) wasted no time, getting the first if its five spots in the first inning. A walk and an infield hit put two on for junior Hayden Cornwell (Newport Beach, Calif.), who singled up the middle for the first run of the game. A hit batter loaded the bases for sophomore Nate Rodman (Corvallis, Ore.), who hit into a fielder's choice play to bring home the second run. Karson then singled down the line in right, plating two more. Sophomore Kendall Helbert (St. Louis, Mo.) brought in the final run of the frame with another fielder's choice grounder.

WPI (14-8, 7-3 NEWMAC) got one back in the bottom half of the inning on a Sean Greene RBI double, but MIT answered that in the second when senior Creed Mangrum (Sandy, Utah) scored on a wild pitch with the bases loaded. Parent took over from there as he held the Engineers to three hits over the next four innings, getting the assistance of a pair of double plays to keep it a 6-1 game.

A five-run sixth broke the game open for MIT. Freshman John Drago (Peoria, Ariz.) started the inning with a triple, with junior Parker Tew (Chapel Hill, N.C.) and Mangrum following with a single and a double that resulted in another pair of runs. MIT then added on three more runs, with Rodman and senior Patrick Dayton (Archer City, Texas) picking up RBIs, with the other run coming home on a passed ball.

MIT added an insurance run in the eighth when Karson knocked in his third run of the game with a single to right. WPI came back to make it interesting in the bottom of the ninth, scoring five time on four hits. With one down a walk and a pair of singles brought home the first run. A hit batter then loaded the bases for Anthony Capuano, who drew a walk to force in another run. After a fielder's choice play brought home another runner, John Caliri and Brendan Walsh picked up back-to-back singles to make it 12-7. That brought in senior Rob Bertucci (Bellville, Ill.) out of the bullpen for MIT and he struck out the final WPI hitter to end it.

MIT will play again tomorrow, traveling to Amherst College where they will take on the Jeffs starting at 3:30 p.m. WPI will be on the field again tomorrow as well as it plays at Worcester State at 3:30 p.m.
