Box Score HARWICH, Mass. – MIT's school record run in the NCAA Division III New England Baseball Regional came to an end this afternoon as Endicott College broke open a close game with four runs in the ninth to come away with a 7-3 victory. MIT wrapped up its impressive 2014 campaign with a 27-15 record, while Endicott improved to 34-15 with the win.
Endicott scored the first two runs of the game, pushing across single runs in the third and the fifth, with Harry Oringer delivering RBI singles in each inning for the Gulls. Endicott starter, Luke Morse, held MIT in check on three hits over the first five innings before the Engineers broke through for a run in the sixth. With one out senior Creed Mangrum (Sandy, Utah) was hit by a pitch, moving to third on a base hit by junior Hayden Cornwell (Newport Beach, Calif.). Sophomore Nate Rodman (Corvallis, Ore.) then singled to center to bring in the first run of the day for MIT.
In the top of the seventh Endicott again made it a two-run game when Steve Morganelli led off with a double to right, moved up to third on an error and came in to make it 3-1 on a ground out by Cody Hall. The Gulls then broke it open in the ninth. A single followed by a double from EJ Martinez started the inning and made it 4-1. Endicott then loaded the bases on a fielder's choice and a single for Hall who singled through the right side to score two runs. Cam Farnham then followed with an RBI single to make it 7-1. Senior Brandon Lowe (Brier, Wash.) came out of the bullpen for MIT and shut down the rally, retiring three straight to send it to the bottom of the ninth.
Rodman drew a walk to lead off in the ninth and junior Parker Tew (Chapel Hill, N.C.) followed with a double to put two runners in scoring position for the Engineers. Davarn Nova came on for Endicott to put a halt to the rally, but junior K.J. Parent (Knoxville, Tenn.) greeted him with an RBI single. Nova allowed one more run to score, but it came on a double-play ball that left the bases empty. A strikeout then ended the game and MIT's season and sent Endicott into a showdown with Southern Maine for the regional title.
Sophomore Alan Wang (Paoli, Pa.) started and took the loss for MIT, going six innings and giving up seven hits and three runs. Morse picked up the win, completing eight innings and allowing three runs on six hits. Parent was the only Engineer with two hits, while Hall led the Gulls with his 2-for-4 day and three RBI.
