WEST WINDSOR, N.J. – On the final day of the 2014 Intercollegiate Rowing Association National Championships, on Lake Mercer, the MIT men's lightweight crew team wrapped up its 2013-14 season, with both its Varsity 8 and Varsity 4 crews in action.
First up for the Cardinal and Grey was the Varsity 8 crew racing in the second heat against crews from Dartmouth, Princeton and Yale. Needing to make the top-three to advance to the Grand Final, the Engineers fell just short, finishing less than eight seconds behind Dartmouth in 6:03.286 in fourth. In a two-crew race with Navy in the Petite Final, MIT could not catch the Midshipmen at the end as the Engineers finished six seconds behind their opponent in 6:05.495.
MIT's Varsity 4 crew started its day in the first heat of racing, finishing fifth in the field of six with a time of 6:58.069 that put the Engineers in the Petite Final. There the top-four crews all finished within 10 seconds of one another, with MIT just edging out Georgetown for third by less than a second with its effort of 6:56.871.
