Leonia, N.J. -- The No. 2 MIT men's lightweight crew team opened the spring season in historic fashion, defeating Yale and Georgetown to capture the Joy Cup for the first time since 1978 at the National Collegiate Lightweight Invitational Overpeck Park.
The Joy Cup is named for James C. Joy, a legendary rowing coach who coached both the Yale and MIT lightweights.
VARSITY EIGHT (1V+):

- MIT defeated Georgetown by over three seconds to claim the Joy Cup while finishing ten seconds ahead of third place Yale. Princeton (6:15.140) was the only first varsity crew to finish the day with a faster time on the course than MIT.
- During morning racing, MIT defeated Dartmouth but was just over three second back of first place Penn.
