No. 6 MIT Women's Swimming and Diving Swims Past Amherst on Senior Day

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Competing in their final home dual meet of the season, the sixth ranked MIT women's swimming & diving team defeated Amherst College, 216-105, on Senior Day in the Zesiger Sports and Fitness Center Pool. With the win, the Engineers improve to 6-1 in dual meets this season, as well as earned their second straight victory against the Jeffs.

Senior Michelle Cunningham (Wayland, Mass.), juniors Margaret Guo (San Diego, Calif.) and Lena Yang (East Stroudsburg, Pa.), and freshman Amanda Wu (Cedar Park, Texas) collaborated for a first place finish in the 200 Yard Freestyle Relay (1:37.86). Guo was also apart of MIT's 400 Yard Medley Relay - senior Emmie Ryan (Avon, Ind.), sophomore Veronika Jedryka (Arlington Heights, Ill.) and freshman Jessica Chen (Rockville, Md.) – that claimed first place in 3:56.66. In the 200 Yard Medley Relay, Guo, Jedryka, Yang and Chen collaborated for a first place performance, recording a time of 1:49.74.

Ryan captured the 1000 Yard Freestyle, touching the wall in 10:45.31, while placing second in the 500 Yard Freestyle (5:11.39) and 100 Yard Freestyle (53.56). Wu finished first in the 100 Yard Freestyle, clocking a time of 53.04.

In the 200 Yard Freestyle, Jedryka claimed first with a time of 1:56.58. She also finished first in the 100 Yard Backstroke (59.55), while senior Jane He (Yardley, Pa.) placed third in 1:02.76.

Jedryka helped the Cardinal and Gray sweep the 200 Yard Backstroke with a time of 2:07.22, while freshman Joanna Han (Marlboro, N.J.) came in second (2:12.21) and He came in third (2:12.63). Freshman Mary Thielking (Fishers, Ind.) captured the 500 Yard Freestyle (5:11.17) and placed third in the 200 Yard Butterfly (2:10.67).

Senior Valkyrie Felso (Alpharetta, Ga.) recorded a pair of second place performances in the 1 Meter Dive (114.08) and 3 Meter Dive (110.25). Senior Taylor Pearl (Solon, Ohio) guided MIT's third 200 Yard Freestyle Relay unit – junior Sarah Wilson (Westerville, Ohio), and sophomores Isabella Voelkl (Austin, Texas) and Tammy Tai (Sunnyvale, Calif.) – to a fourth place finish (1:45.20), defeating Amherst's second and third unit.

Next up, MIT travels to Wheaton College for the Wheaton Invitational, which will take place on Friday, February 6 and Saturday, February 7.
