PHILADLEPHIA, Pa. – In its last tune-up before heading into postseason action, the MIT men's lightweight crew team had both of its entries compete in the finals at the Dad Vail Regatta this weekend in Philadelphia. The varsity eight was the runner-up for the Thomas W. Loschiavo Trophy while the second varsity four finished fourth while vying for the James J. Lynch Trophy.
The Engineers' varsity four opened the two-day competition on Friday by placing second in their heat with a time of 7:04.709, three seconds behind Fordham University. In the semifinal, Temple University picked up the win by crossing the line in 6:36.836. MIT came in two seconds later, edging out Michigan by four-tenths of a second, followed by the University of Virginia (6:39.685), Rollins College (6:46.857), and High Point University (6:57.315). In the final, Temple registered another victory as it finished in 6:32.086, narrowly ahead of Fordham (6:34.773), Michigan (6:36.620), and MIT (6:39.129).
Racing for the Thomas W. Loschiavo Trophy, the varsity eight was bested by Delaware, 5:46.319 – 5:47.052. The remaining four boats finished the race during the next 50 seconds, with Mercyhurst being the next crew to complete the course in 6:00.415.
Next up for MIT will be its conference championship regatta, the EARC Sprints, to be held on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Massachusetts on Sunday, May 17.
