Box Score HAMPTON, Va. – In the first game of its spring break trip, the MIT baseball team saw some early errors cost the Engineers an early one-run advantage in a 5-2 loss to Castleton at War Memorial Stadium in Hampton, Virginia. Sophomore Austin Filiere (Chandler, Ariz.) had a pair of hits and a stolen base to lead MIT.
MIT (0-4) jumped out to an early lead when Filiere singled, stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch and then scored on an error. Errors let Castleton (4-5) back into it in the bottom of the second when three miscues by the Engineers led to three runs by the Spartans as they took a lead that they would not give up.
Filiere also scored MIT's second run of the game, leading off the fourth with a single to right and eventually coming around to score on yet another error to make it a one-run game. Castleton stretched its lead out to three in the fifth, getting an RBI double from Jim Buckley and a run-scoring ground out from Dillon Behham.
That was all that Castleton starter, Sam Spencer, would need as he held MIT to just two hits over the final four innings to pick up the complete game victory. He allowed six hits and two unearned runs overall, striking out six to improve to 2-1. Junior David Hesslink (San Diego, Calif.) started for MIT and was tagged with the loss, giving up five runs; three eared, on five hits over 4.2 innings while striking out eight.
Sophomore Zach Michaud (Moorestown, N.J.) pitched well in relief for the Engineers, surrendering just one hit in his 2.1 innings on the mound. Freshman Jack Murphy (Pleasanton, Calif.) finished up for MIT, striking out the side in the eighth.
MIT will play twice tomorrow at War Memorial Stadium taking on Tufts University at 3:00 p.m. followed by a 6:00 p.m. matchup with the College of St. Joseph.
