MIT Drops Pair In Georgia

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

ATLANTA & DEMOREST, Ga. – Playing two games in two different locations, the MIT baseball team came out on the short end of both scores in its final contests of its spring trip south. In the afternoon the Engineers took No. 7 Emory University to extra-innings before falling 5-4 in 11. In the evening outing MIT played at Piedmont College for a second straight night, with the Lions erupting for 17 runs on their way to a 17-6 decision.

Game 1

After both teams scored a run in the first inning, Emory (19-6) took a 2-1 lead in the fifth when Nick Chambers knocked a two-out RBI single back up the middle off of MIT (2-6) starter, junior David Hesslink (San Diego, Calif.). The Engineers answered in their next at-bat in the sixth, scoring twice off Jackson Weeg. Filiere started the inning with a single that was followed by an error and a hit batter that loaded the bases with Engineers. Senior Kendall Helbert (St. Louis, Mo.) then put MIT on top with a two-run single to right.

A walk, triple and wild pitch plated two more for Emory in the bottom of the eighth, putting the Eagles back on top, 4-3. An error in the ninth paved the way for MIT to tie things up and send it into extra innings. Senior Alec Echevarria (Chula Vista, Calif.) reached on that error and sophomore Garrett Greenwood (Edmond, Okla.) singled with one down to put runners on the corners. MIT then pulled off a double-steal to tie it a 4-4.

Emory broke though for the winning run in the 11th, however, when Chris Young singled to right with two down to plate Wetmore, who had led off the frame with a walk, from second. That made a winner out of Kyle Monk, who came on in the ninth for the Eagles and tossed three scoreless innings, allowing three hits.

Hesslink went seven innings in his start, giving up just one earned run on six hits.

Game 2

After scoring just two runs in last night's game, Piedmont erupted for four in the first and then nine in the second to put the contest away early. A bases-loaded double from Zach Langley highlighted the four-run first before the Lions sent 15 hitters to the plate in the second as they scored nine runs on just four hits, plating three on bases loaded walks.

MIT pushed across two runs in the fourth, getting RBI singles from Echevarria and freshman Alec Kushner (Cooper City, Fla.). Echevarria added a two-run home run in the sixth for the Engineers, with junior John Drago (Peoria, Ariz.) adding a sac fly and Greenwood a run-scoring hit to account for the other MIT runs.

MIT will return home from its spring break trip and open New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Saturday when the Engineers will host Coast Guard in a doubleheader starting at 12:00 p.m. on Briggs Field.
