BROCKTON, Mass. – MIT broke on top in a scoreless game with a pair of runs in the fourth and then saw its offense explode for seven runs in the sixth as the Engineers went on to walk away with a 16-1 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) baseball win over Emerson College. Senior Kendall Helbert (St. Louis, Mo.) and sophomore Austin Filiere (Chandler, Ariz.) combined to drive in nine runs for MIT.

After three scoreless innings that saw each team collect just one hit apiece, MIT (5-8, 3-1 NEWMAC) broke through with a pair in the fourth. Senior Nate Rodman (Corvallis, Ore.) led off with a single and then moved up on a walk and a sacrifice. He then scored the first run of the game on a groundout by freshman Alec Kushner (Cooper City, Fla.) before the second Engineer run scored on a balk.

MIT then broke the game open with seven runs in the sixth. Helbert led off with a triple, scoring on a wild pitch. The Engineers went on to load the bases for Filiere, who cleared them with a one-out double. Sophomore David Heller (Fair Lawn, N.J.) and Helbert added RBI singles in the rally that gave MIT a 9-0 advantage.

That was all MIT starter, junior David Hesslink (San Diego, Calif.) needed. He surrendered just four hits and one run over six innings, striking out eight against just one walk for his second win of the season. The only run he gave up came in the bottom of the sixth when Emerson (3-15, 0-4 NEWMAC) put a pair on after a double by Tim Quitadamo and a single from Mitch Moreman. Pablo Feldman then plated the run with a ground out to second.

MIT went on to ice the game with runs in the seventh, eighth and ninth, with the big blow a grand slam from Helbert with one down in the final frame. Senior Eric Tu (San Ramon, Calif.) and sophomore Zach Michaud (Moorestown, N.J.) closed things out for MIT out of the bullpen, with Tu tossing a pair of hitless innings and Michaud a scoreless ninth.

Helbert went 4-for-5 with a triple and home run, driving in five. Filiere drove in four on two hits, while Rodman and sophomore Garrett Greenwood (Edmond, Okla.) added a pair of hits in the 15-hit Engineer attack. Rodman, Heller, and Helbert all scored three runs for MIT.

MIT and Emerson will close out the three-game conference series with a doubleheader tomorrow that will be play at Briggs Field at MIT. First pitch for game one is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
