THE BASICS:
- Location: Elsah, Ill. (Principia North Farm Course - Hosted by Principia College)
- The Lead: Led by a 19th-place finish by junior Dennis Maloney (New Albany, Ohio), the No. 7 ranked MIT men's cross country team placed 16th out of 32 teams at the 2017 NCAA Division III National Championship. Maloney earned All-American status for the second straight year with his final time of 24:43.74 over the eight-kilometer course.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Maloney went through the three-mile mark in sixth place in 14:46.20 as he maintained contact with the lead pack until the final minutes of the race. Junior Josh Rosenkranz (Glencoe, Ill.) sat in 71st place through two miles, but made a surge over the third mile and crossed that split in 48th place in a time of 15:06.50. He eventually finished in a time of 25:04.64 and in 47th place, narrowly missing out on All-American honors.
- Senior Alex Knoedler (Canon City, Colo.) was the third MIT runner in 154th place at 25:47.05, while junior Aidan Gilson (Florence, Mass.) was the fourth MIT runner in 157th place at 25:47.74. The final scoring runner for the Engineers was sophomore Brian Bates (Corning, N.Y.) as he finished in 26:04.86 to place 196th overall.
- Sophomore Billy Woltz (Logan, Ohio) was sixth for MIT and 227th overall in 26:19.69, followed by senior Nicholas Waltman (Lexington, Ky.) in 233rd place in a time of 26:22.42.
