Baseball Drops 15-5 Road Final at No. 20 St. Joseph's

THE BASICS:

- Score: No. 20 St. Joseph's (Maine) 15, MIT 5

- The Lead: In a non-conference game on Monday afternoon, the MIT baseball team dropped a 15-5 road final at No. 20 St. Joseph's (Maine) at the Larry Mahaney Diamond.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- The Monks took a 7-0 lead in the second inning before the Engineers got on the board with two runs in the top of the third. Junior David Heller (Fair Lawn, N.J.) came home on a sacrifice fly to center by junior Austin Filiere (Chandler, Ariz.) for the first run, followed by junior Garrett Greenwood (Edmond, Okla.) scored on an RBI single to left by freshman Matt Johnston (Portola Valley, Calif.).

- Senior John Drago (Peoria, Ariz.) scored an unearned run in the sixth, followed by unearned runs from Johnston and junior Kyler Kocher (Mesa, Ariz.) in the ninth to round out the scoring for the Engineers.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Filiere led the MIT offense with a 2-for-5 showing that included a double, while sophomore Alec Kushner (Cooper City, Fla.) was 1-for-4 with two RBI and Kocher drew three walks. By reaching base safely today in his 60th straight game, Filiere is now tied for the third-longest streak in NCAA Division III history.

- For the Monks, three players posted two hits each, including Jameson Collins who had two runs scored, two RBI and a home run. Joey Murphy posted a 1-for-3 showing in the leadoff spot as well, scoring four runs and drawing three walks.

- Sophomore Nick Charchut (Santa Monica, Calif.) took the loss for MIT to fall to 0-1 as he went 1.2 innings with two hits allowed as none of the seven runs he allowed were earned. Aaron Hall improved to 4-0 for the Monks as he pitched 4.1 innings with three hits allowed, two runs, four walks and one strikeout.

UP NEXT:

- MIT is back in action on Tuesday, May 2nd as the Engineers host Wesleyan University for a 4 p.m. start at Fran O'Brien Field. Prior to the game, the Engineers will recognize the three members of this year's Senior Class for their contributions to the MIT baseball program during their careers.
