- Records: No. 6 MIT (16-1-2, 9-0-0 NEWMAC); WPI (13-4-1, 5-3-1 NEWMAC)
- Location: Cambridge, Mass. (Roberts Field at Steinbrenner Stadium)
- The Lead: A goal by senior captain Sophia Struckman (Scottsdale, Ariz.) was the difference today as the No. 6 MIT women's soccer team edged New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) rival WPI by a 1-0 final in Cambridge.
Today's victory secured the outright NEWMAC Regular Season title for MIT for the fifth time in six years and the Engineers will look to become the first team in the conference since Wheaton College in 2007 (9-0) to complete a perfect regular season on Saturday.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- 13th minute (12:11) - Struckman registered her sixth goal of the season as she finished a cross from the right side by classmate Allie Werner (Tyler, Texas).
- MIT nearly scored its second goal of the game in the 37th minute as first-year Emma Rutherford (Nashville, Tenn.) lined a shot to the top left corner of the net, but it was headed away by a WPI defender and out of play.
- WPI put two shots on net, one in the 51st minute by Kristen McCrea and one in the 72nd minute by Lauren Kaija, but both were saved by MIT keeper Ava Gillikin (Flemington, N.J.) as Cambridge's Engineers picked up their 16th shutout of the season.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Gillikin registered her seventh solo shutout of the season with a pair of saves for MIT, while WPI keeper Mandy St. Germain (13-4-1) made 11 saves for WPI over the 90-minute match.
- MIT outshot WPI by a 20-6 margin and held a 9-2 advantage in corner kicks.
- MIT picked up its first win over WPI since 2015 and improved to 19-6-4 in the all-time series which dates back to 1995.
- MIT remained at No. 6 in this week's United Soccer Coaches Division III National Poll and at No. 10 in the D3Soccer.com National Rankings. The new NCAA regional poll will come out tomorrow, but in the initial rankings MIT was slotted at second in New England.
- The win pushed MIT's unbeaten streak in NEWMAC regular season matches to 38, which pushed the Engineers into sole possession of 13th position in NCAA Division III Women's Soccer history. This streak dates back to September 17, 2016. It also moved MIT's unbeaten streak to 16 matches and its overall winning streak to ten.
- The Engineers also extended their unbeaten streak at home to 46 matches which is now tied for ninth longest in NCAA Division III Women's Soccer history with SUNY Oneonta, which accomplished the feat from 1996-2001.
- In nine NEWMAC matches this fall, MIT has outscored its opponents by a 33-1 margin.
UP NEXT:
- MIT will play its final regular season match of the season on Saturday, November 2 at Emerson College at 1:00 pm. At the conclusion of the day, the NEWMAC will release seeding and a complete schedule for the postseason tournament. As the number one seed, MIT will receive a first round bye and will host a semifinal match on Thursday, November 7 at a time to be determined later.
