- The Lead: The MIT women's soccer team saw its 2019 season come to a close tonight as the nationally-ranked Engineers were edged by No. 24 Williams College in penalty kicks. The score stood at 1-1 after 110-minutes of action, but the Ephs came away with a 5-4 victory in PK's.
The Ephs will advance to the sectional round and will play NESCAC rival Tufts University next weekend, while the Engineers see their season end with a record of 20-1-3.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- 48th minute (47:29): After a scoreless half, sophomore Karenna Groff (Weston, Mass.) gave MIT a 1-0 lead in the 48th minute. Senior Montana Reilly (Los Angeles, Calif.) set up the play with a cross to the middle of the box and Groff finished her shot into the net for her 17th goal of the year.
- 87th minute (86:53): Williams tied the match up at 1-1 with 3:07 to play in regulation as Rain Condie connected with Alison Lu, who tallied her second goal of the season.
- Overtime: MIT outshot Williams 7-1 in the 20 minutes of extra time as the Engineers received great shots by Sophia Struckman (Scottsdale, Ariz.), Eva Anderson (Edina, Minn.) and Groff, but all were saved by Williams keeper Chelsea Taylor.
- Penalty Kicks: The Ephs won the penalty kick shootout, 5-4, as Claire Tolliver, Condie, Aspen Pierson, Lu and Mikayla Kappes all converted for Williams. MIT's made attempts came from Emily Berzolla (Riverside, Conn.), Groff, Allie Werner (Tyler, Texas) and Struckman.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Despite falling in penalty kicks, MIT's decision resulted in a tie which extended its unbeaten streak to 50 matches. MIT's senior class never lost a game on Roberts Field over their four years on the team.
- MIT closes a historic season as the Engineers won 20 matches for the second time in three seasons and broke the single season records for longest winning streak (14), longest unbeaten streak (21), most goals (80), points (217), fewest goals allowed (4), fewest goals allowed per game (0.16), shutouts (20) and consecutive shutouts (10).
- Groff registered her 17th goal and 41st point of the season in today's match as she became the first student-athlete Amy Ludlum in 2006 to accomplish the feat.
- In today's match, MIT outshot Williams by a 20-11 margin and held a 9-3 advantage in corner kicks.
- MIT first-year keeper Lauren Castle (Ridgefield, Conn.) made four saves and completed her rookie year with a record of 2-1-1, while Williams keeper Chelsea Taylor (3-3-2) made save saves in the effort for the visitors.
