Allison Belts Two Homers in 3-3 Tie With Suffolk in Home Opener

Box Score

THE BASICS:

- Records: MIT (3-2-1); Suffolk University (5-6-1)

- Scores: MIT 3, Suffolk University 3

- Location: Cambridge, Mass. (Fran O'Brien Field)

- The Lead: Led by a pair of home runs and three runs batted in from junior Thomas Allison (Kingwood, Texas), the MIT baseball team tied Suffolk University in a 3-3 final in the home opener for the Engineers on Tuesday afternoon. This marked the third career multi-home run game for Allison and his first since a two-home run, four-RBI performance vs. WPI in on March 24, 2018. The game was called due to darkness after the 12th inning.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- The Rams jumped on the board with a pair of runs in the first inning as Suffolk took advantage of two errors. The first unearned run came home on an RBI double to right field by Tim Brigham that scored Will Hopkins from second base. Brigham then came home on a Trevor Lee single up the middle and the visitors held the 2-0 edge.

- MIT cut the lead in half in the bottom of the first as Allison's two-out single to left center scored senior Jared Schwait (Boca Raton, Fla.). Schwait reached on a leadoff walk and stole second and third before coming home to make it 2-1.

- Allison launched a solo shot to left center with two outs in the third to tie the game at 2-2 and the score remained that way until the top of the sixth when Suffolk answered with a two-out rally. Brigham reached on a fielder's choice, moved to second on a groundout and came around on an RBI single up the middle by Rich Giandrea.

- MIT trailed with darkness looming and the bottom of the ninth as its last opportunity to tie the game, but Allison answered with another home to left field to tie things at 3-3. In the three extra innings, both teams had a handful of chances for the possible game winner, but the relief pitchers kept the game tied at 3-3.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Allison led the Engineers with a 3-for-5 performance with three RBI and two runs scored as MIT picked up five hits overall. For the Rams, both Blasé Cormier and Giandrea registered two hits and Hopkins and Rich Gilbride each drew two walks.

- MIT's pitchers scattered nine hits and registered 13 strikeouts as senior Nick Charchut (Santa Monica, Calif.) got the Engineers started with four innings of four-strikeout ball. First-year Ben Burke (Chelmsford, Mass.) went three innings, followed by first-year Jonah Scott (Oak Park, Calif.) and junior Tony Rice (Colorado Springs, Colo.) with four innings to close it out. Rice gave up three hits with six strikeouts and no walks to keep MIT within striking distance for the victory.

- Suffolk's Parker Browne went five innings with three hits allowed, two runs, three walks and six strikeouts. He was followed by Michael Muscarella, who was excellent in allowing only two hits and one run with six strikeouts and no walks.

UP NEXT:

- MIT continues its home schedule on Wednesday, March 20th as the Engineers host Bates College for a non-conference game beginning at 3:30 p.m. at Fran O'Brien Field.
