THE BASICS:

- The Lead: Led by a six-inning win on the mound by junior Zack Kopstein (Tiburon, Calif.), the MIT baseball team overcame an early 1-0 deficit to defeat Clark University by a 7-2 final on Tuesday afternoon. The Engineers put together an 11-hit attack on offense and have now won four of their last five games.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- The Cougars got on the board right away as Andrew Thibault led off the game with a solo homer to left center for the 1-0 edge.

- In the top of the third, MIT put up a three-run inning with three hits and a pair of Clark errors to go up 3-1. Senior Jared Schwait (Boca Raton, Fla.) singled to left to lead off and eventually came home on a sacrifice fly to right by junior Matt Johnston (Portola Valley, Calif.). Sophomore Andrew Krause (St. Louis, Mo.) doubled to bring in first-year Cory O'Shea (Glen Allen, Va.) and eventually scored on the play following a Clark error for the 3-1 advantage.

- Sophomore Zach Roberts (West Chester, Pa.) scored in the fourth on a Clark throwing error for the 4-1 lead, followed by three more runs in the fifth. Johnston scored in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by junior Thomas Allison (Kingwood, Texas), while senior Alec Kushner (Cooper City, Fla.) launched a two-run homer to make it 7-1. Clark squeaked out a run in the bottom of the fifth to cut the lead to 7-2, which was the final as MIT took the first of two games from the Cougars.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Four Engineers finished with multiple hits, with Krause going 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two runs batted in. For Clark, Thibault had two RBI and scored a run, while Nick Jordan finished the game 2-for-4 with one run.

- Kopstein went six innings for MIT to move to 2-0 overall, scattering five hits with one earned run and four strikeouts. First-years Ben Burke (Chelmsford, Mass.) and Jonah Scott (Oak Park, Calif.) each threw scoreless innings, followed by a 1-2-3 ninth from Allison with one strikeout to seal the win.

- Dan Shaw took the loss for Clark to fall to 0-4 as he went 4.1 innings with nine hits, seven runs allowed (five earned), two walks and four strikeouts.
