- The Lead: In the final NEWMAC regular-season games, the MIT baseball team split a doubleheader with No. 11 ranked and league-leading Wheaton College on Saturday afternoon. The Engineers took game one in a 19-2 final before the Lyons shut out the Engineers, 6-0, in the nightcap.  

Game One
HOW IT HAPPENED:

- MIT got on the board in the bottom of the third with a pair of unearned runs off of Wheaton starter Griffin Young. First-year Cory O'Shea (Glen Allen, Va.) reached on leadoff error, followed by a single to center by senior Jared Schwait (Boca Raton, Fla.). Advancing into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt, O'Shea scored on an RBI single by junior Matt Johnston (Portola Valley, Calif.) and Schwait came around on a Wheaton error for the 2-0 lead.

- The Lyons evened the score up at 2-2 in the top of the sixth after loading the bases with no outs. Stephen Quigley scored on a Nick Raposo sacrifice fly to left, followed by a hard-hit single to center by Jared Sharkey that drove in Brody Ashley from second to tie the game.

- The Engineers immediately answered with a run in the bottom of the frame as senior Alec Kushner (Cooper City, Fla.) scored on an RBI groundout by sophomore Ethan Rolland (Burke, Va.). Kushner led off with a single to center, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, to third on a passed ball and scored on Rolland's slow roller down the first base line.

- In the top of the seventh, Wheaton's George Mulcahey reached on a leadoff error and moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt. At that point, MIT's Tommy Hannan (San Marino, Calif.) came on in relief of starter Zack Kopstein (Tiburon, Calif.) and immediately got the Engineers out of the jam to preserve the 3-2 edge. For Kopstein, he went 6.1 innings and scattered five hits with two runs, no walks and one strikeout.  

- In the bottom of the seventh, Joshua Roberge came on for Griffin Young and the Engineers struck for three runs on four hits. Schwait led off with a double and came home on an RBI single by junior Tony Rice (Colorado Springs, Colo.) before a two-run homer to left center from junior Thomas Allison (Kingwood, Texas) made it 6-2.

- MIT blew the game wide open with 13 runs in the bottom of the eighth behind five hits and two Wheaton errors. Highlighting the outburst was a two-RBI single to center from Allison and a bases-clearing double to right center from Johnston as MIT grabbed the 19-2 lead.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Kopstein improved to 3-2 with the win, while Young fell to 5-1 after six innings and three runs allowed with eight strikeouts. In two innings of relief, four Wheaton pitchers gave up nine hits and 16 runs with seven walks.

- Allison was 4-for-6 with five RBI and two runs scored, while Johnston was 3-for-5 with four RBI and two runs. Kushner had four hits and two runs scored and Schwait finished with two hits and a team-high four runs scored. O'Shea also scored three times and had eight defensive assists in the win.

- For the Lyons, Jacob Studley and Jared Sharkey each finished 2-for-4 and were the lone Wheaton players with multiple hits.

Game Two
HOW IT HAPPENED:

- Wheaton jumped on the board immediately in the first as Zach Demattio launched a grand slam to left for the 4-0 lead. The Lyons added to the lead with RBI doubles in the second by Brody Ashley and Sharkey to make it a 6-0 margin.

- Over the final seven innings, the two teams combined for just five hits as Wheaton John Mikosz allowed just three MIT hits over 8.1 innings with nine strikeouts and just one walk.

- For MIT, senior Nick Charchut (Santa Monica, Calif.) scattered five hits over seven innings with seven strikeouts to go along with a perfect ninth inning by first-year Ben Burke (Chelmsford, Mass).

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Wheaton's Demattio was the lone player with multiple hits for either team as he was 2-for-5 with four RBI. 

- Mikosz improved to 6-0 on the mound for Wheaton, while senior Travis Hank (Chicago, Ill.) dropped to 1-2 overall as he went one inning and allowed four runs on two hits.
