Callahan Pitches Baseball Into the NEWMAC Championship Game With Complete-Game Shutout

THE BASICS:

- Records: No. 4 MIT (21-16-1); No. 2 WPI (23-15)

- The Lead: Led by a complete-game shutout by senior pitcher Patrick Callahan (Vicksburg, Mich.), the MIT baseball team advanced to the NEWMAC Championship Game with a 10-0 win over No. 2 seeded WPI on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- MIT jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second as Ethan Rolland (Burke, Va.) singled up the middle with one out to score Kushner from second.

- The lead swelled to 7-0 following three-run homers by junior Thomas Allison (Kingwood, Texas) in the third and sophomore Andrew Krause (St. Louis, Mo.) in the fifth.

- Rolland drove in another run in the eighth and later scored on a wild pitch to make it 9-0, followed by an unearned run from junior Tony Rice (Colorado Springs, Colo.) for the 10-0 final.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Callahan moved to 5-1 on the season after his 112-pitch, complete-game win. Scattering six hits, he struck out seven Engineers with no walks. WPI starter Kyle Foley took the loss in 2.1 innings pitched, falling to 1-1.

- Johnston was 4-for-5 with a double, while Rice, Allison, Rolland and Zach Roberts (West Chester, Pa.) all had a pair of hits. For WPI, Ryan Tropeano was the only player with multiple hits as he went 2-for-4 in the leadoff spot.

UP NEXT:

- The Engineers now advance into Sunday's NEWMAC Championship Game as they will take on the winner of the WPI/Babson game beginning at 3 p.m. at the New England Baseball Complex in Northborough, Mass. WPI and Babson will open the day with a Noon elimination game.
