- The Lead: On a blustery Saturday afternoon, the MIT baseball team dropped a 12-7 non-conference final at Endicott College.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- After the first two innings were scoreless, the Gulls got on the board in the third as Anthony Macchia led off with a single and eventually came home on an RBI groundout to second by Kyle Brennan for the 1-0 edge.
- MIT struck for three runs in the top of the fourth as the Engineers took advantage of a number of Endicott miscues. First-year Teddy Schoenfeld (Boulder, Colo.) was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a wild pitch, while senior Matt Johnston (Portola Valley, Calif.) followed that with a walk. Junior Andrew Krause (St. Louis, Mo.) doubled to right center to drive in Schoenfeld for the RBI and Johnston came home on the field error by the center fielder that allowed Krause to move to third. Krause then scored on a wild pitch by Kevin Gould for the 3-1 MIT lead.
- The Gulls took control in the bottom of the fifth with a nine-run inning that began with a leadoff triple by John Duffy in the first of five hits in the frame. Ryan Prosser's three-RBI triple down the right field line and a two-run homer from Jordan Carvalho highlighted the outburst as the hosts pushed to the 12-3 advantage.
- MIT added two runs each in both the seventh and eighth innings though to cut into the lead and made it a 12-7 margin. RBI hits from first-year Kyle Sonandres (Torrance, Calif.) and junior Zach Roberts (West Chester, Pa.) brought home two in the seventh, while first-year Erik Anderson (Palos Verdes, Calif.) hit a two-run homer to right center in the eighth. This was the first collegiate home run for Anderson.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- The Engineers outhit the Gulls by a 12-11 margin as MIT had four players with multiple hits. Krause, junior Ethan Rolland (Burke, Va.), sophomore Nick Aiello (Freehold, N.J.) and Sonandres each had two hits while Anderson had two runs batted in.
- For Endicott, Duffy was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two runs batted in to lead the offense.
- MIT starter Zack Kopstein (Tiburon, Calif.) went 4.1 innings and gave up four runs (three earned) with four strikeouts and no walks as he fell to 0-1 on the season. On the other side, Gould went 6.2 innings for the Gulls and allowed five runs (three earned) on six hits and eight strikeouts. Joseph Brown threw 2.1 innings in relief and struck out six.
