The Lead: Two goals in the third quarter helped lift the MIT field hockey team to a 3-0 victory over Wellesley College in a NEWMAC game on Saturday afternoon.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Â
- MIT opened the scoring after 2:31 elapsed when senior
Lucy Kitch-Peck (Bethlehem, Pa.) converted a penalty stroke.
Alex Lenart almost registered the equalizer late in the frame but senior goalie
Juliana Strother (Mequon, Wis.) came up with the save.
Â
- The second quarter was a defensive battle. Wellesley had a 3-2 edge in penalty corners as the Engineers had a 5-2 margin in shots, three of which were on goal.
Â
- MIT increased its lead to 2-0 in the 36
th minute. On a breakaway, junior
Liberty Ladd (Falmouth, Maine) sent a pass from the near sideline to junior
Paige Forester (Glencoe, Ill.) in the middle of the field. Forester drew goalie
Kyra Deehr-Lewis off her line, faked a pass to the far post, dodged Deehr-Lewis and sent the ball just inside the near post.
Â
- The Engineers added an insurance goal almost three minutes later. Senior
Emily Genevriere (San Diego, Calif.) corralled a loose ball in the circle with Deehr-Lewis off her line, spun to her right and sent a blast to the near post.
Â
-
Cass Novello nearly ended the shutout with a pair of shots in the fourth quarter, however, senior goalie
Kiely Smiga-McManus (Etna, N.H.) turned away both attempts.
Â
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Â
- MIT ended the day with advantages in shots (19-5), shots on goal (11-3), and penalty corners (13-7). However, the Engineers produced seven shots, six penalty corners, and five shots on goal in the pivotal third quarter.
Â
- Strother finished with one save while Smiga-McManus had two in MIT's sixth shutout of the season.
Â
- Deehr-Lewis collected eight saves for Wellesley.
