MIT Water Polo Earns Thrilling OT Victory Over Gannon

The Engineers Split Sunday's matches at the Harvard Invitational

THE BASICS:
 
- Scores: No. 8 MIT – 8, Wagner - 13
No. 8 MIT - 12, Gannon – 11 (OT)
 
- Records: MIT (5-10), Wagner (12-13), Gannon (7-8)
 
- Location: Cambridge, Mass. (Blodgett Pool)
 
- The Lead: Kyle Sandell scored the game-winning goal in overtime as the MIT Engineers rebounded from an earlier loss to Wagner to take a thrilling victory against Gannon on Sunday at the Harvard Invitational.
 

HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME ONE vs. Wagner
 
- A tightly contested first quarter saw the Seahawks take a 4-3 advantage over the Engineers with senior Miller Geschke (Los Altos, Calif.) scoring all three MIT goals.
 
- Wagner increased its lead to 6-3 with two goals in the second, before back-to-back goals from senior John Steele (Old Greenwich, Conn.) at the end of the second and early in the third cut the Seahawks lead to 6-4.
 
- The second half belonged to Wagner as the Seahawks outscored the Engineers, 9-4 in the matches' final two frames to secure the 13-8 win. Along with Steele, MIT got second-half scores from seniors Kaden DiMarco (Eugene, Ore.) and Kyle Sandell (Mountain View, Calif.)
 

HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME TWO vs. Gannon
 
- The Engineers came out scoring in the first half, scoring four times to take a 4-2 lead after the first six minutes of action. Sandell notched two goals while DiMarco and Geschke found the back of the net.
 
- Each team scored twice in the second with Sandell scoring for MIT and Geschke getting his second of the match with one second remaining to send the Engineers into the break with a 6-4 lead.
 
- Gannon came out of the break looking to take over the match as the Golden Knights put up four goals in the quarter, but MIT got a goal from Steele and a last-second goal from DiMarco sent the teams into the fourth tied at eight.
 
- MIT took the lead at 4:22 with a goal from first-year Richard Yun (Irvine, Calif.) off a pass from Weaver, but Gannon responded with a goal of its own at 4:03 to tie the game once again at 9.
 
- The teams traded goals as DiMarco scored at 3:40 followed by a Golden Knights a goal at 2:37. Geschke then scored his third goal of the match at 2:15 to put MIT up 11-10, but Gannon didn't go away as they netted the tying goal a few moments later at 1:47 as the teams would head to overtime.
 
- In the overtime period, Geschke found his classmate Sandell who rifled a throw into the back of the net at 2:34 as his fourth goal of the game gave MIT the thrilling 12-11 win.  
 
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
 
- Against Wagner, Steele had two goals and two assists while Geschke finished with three goals and two assists.
 
- In net in game one, junior Conrad Oakes (Pasadena, Calif.) made five saves and registered a steal, while sophomore Colin Weaver (Huntington Beach, Calif.) finished with 11 saves and an assist. Weaver followed up that performance making 15 saves with an assist against Gannon.
 
- With his three goals against Gannon, Geschke now has 42 this season and Sandell increased his season total to 35. Yun and DiMarco both have 18 scores on the season and Steele has 17.
 
- Geschke also leads the Engineers with 33 assists while Yun is second with 22.

- MIT is back in the pool next weekend for the D3 Eastern Championships which will be held on Saturday, October 23rd in New London, Conn.
