The Lead:Â The fifth-ranked MIT women's soccer team extended its unbeaten streak on Saturday afternoon behind six points from senior
Karenna Groff as the Engineers defeated Wheaton, 5-1.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Engineers took a quick lead just 2:12 into the game when junior
Kaitlin Zareno (Montebello, Calif.) took a long outlet pass from senior
Karenna Groff (Weston, Mass.) and went one-on-one with the Wheaton goalie and beat her to put MIT up 1-0.
- MIT scored again at 6:34 as Groff took a pass from seniorÂ
Grace Xiong (Princeton, N.J.) and beat the Lyons goaltender on the left side to make it 2-0.
- Later in the half Groff caused a Wheaton turnover and found junior
Stephanie Howe (Geneva, Ill.) who put into the left side of the net to give MIT a 3-0 lead just two seconds later at 28:16.
- Groff was not done scoring as she added her second goal of the game at 28:29 as she took a great pass from Howe and tucked the ball into the far post to put MIT up 4-0.
- Wheaton got on the board in the 61
st minute when
Jamie Rattenni took a crossing pass from
Chloe Troy in a crowd in front of the goal and snuck the ball into the back of the net.
- The Engineers answered back at 66:39 as sophomore
Meagan Rowlett (Dana Point, Calif.) took advantage of a misplay in front of the net and scored the walk-in goal to make the score 5-1.
