The Lead:Â The fifth-ranked MIT women's soccer team had their home unbeaten streak snapped as they suffered a tough 2-1 loss against WPI on Wednesday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The first half of action saw each team put some shots on goal, but neither broke through with the first score in the game's first 45 minutes of action.
Â
- MIT finally broke through with a goal at 47:03 as junior
Emma Rutherford (Nashville, Tenn.) took a pass from first-year
Mia Sedgwick (Wilmette, Ill.) and put it past the outstretched hands of WPI goalkeeper
Lili Hellerman for the score.
Â
- The visitors responded a short time later at 55:26 when
Sofia Orrico put a shot in front of the goal that was scooped up by
Caitlin Bonavita and put into the back of the net for the goal.
Â
- WPI took the lead late in the game on a penalty kick goal by
Grace Casey at 79:19 to take a 2-1 advantage.
Â
- MIT looked to tie the game in the late stages, however, they could not find the back of the net as the WPI defense held strong to secure the win.
