No. 5 MIT Earns Shutout Win Over Coast Guard, 2-0

The Engineers earned the top-seed in the NEWMAC

THE BASICS:

- Score: No. 5 MIT – 2, Coast Guard - 0

- Records: MIT (16-1-1, 8-1-0 NEWMAC), Coast Guard (4-10-0, 2-6-0 NEWMAC)

- Location: New London, Conn. (Coast Guard Stadium)

- The Lead: The fifth-ranked MIT women's soccer team got goals in each half as the Engineers defeated Coast Guard, 2-0 on Saturday afternoon. The victory secured the top seed in the NEWMAC Tournament for MIT.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- MIT looked to go up early in the game when sophomore Isabella Struckman (Scottsdale, Ariz.) scooped up a loose ball near the net, but it was knocked away by the Bears' defense.

- First-year Natalie Barnouw (Los Angeles, Calif.) sent in a corner kick in the 35th minute that sophomore Meagan Rowlett (Dana Point, Calif.) deflected in to give the Engineers a 1-0 advantage.

- The teams played the remainder of the half and the majority of the second half without a goal before junior Daena Schuh (Saint John, Ind.) sent in a corner kick that senior Maya Nielan (Danville, Calif.) headed ball over the keeper for the goal at 79:09 which sealed the 2-0 win for MIT.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
 
- The Engineers are 21-1-1 all-time against the Bears dating back to 2000.
 
- The victory gave MIT the top spot in the NEWMAC for the seventh time in program history.
 
- MIT outshot the Bears 23-8 in the contest.
 
- Rowlett leads the Engineers with 10 goals and 21 points this season. Barnouw tops the team with nine assists while her 19 points as third-most on the team. Schuh recorded her first assist on the season while Nielan's goal was her third of the season.
 
- Junior Lauren Castle (Ridgefield, Conn.) earned the win in goal improving to 9-0 on the year as the junior made two saves in the contest. Junior Ava Gillikin (Flemington, N.J.)  made two saves in the second half to help secure the shutout.

UP NEXT:

- MIT will conclude the regular season at home on Saturday, October 30 with a 1 pm contest against Smith. Prior to the match, the Engineers will honor their graduating class.
