Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Â
-
Set 1: The first half of the set was closely played as there were eight ties and two lead changes. Knotted at 15, a kill by sophomore
Emily Cheng (Sunnyvale, Calif.), back-to-back kills from senior
Annie Bryan (Kirkwood, Mo.), and an ace by junior
Lilly Edwards (Kansas City, Mo.) gave MIT some breathing room before going on to capture a 25-21 win.
Â
-
Set 2: The Engineers maintained a small cushion during most of the set as JWU came within two points on three occasions, the last at 15-13 courtesy of a serving error. MIT responded with a kill from Bryan who then recorded a solo block followed by a block assist with Cheng. A kill by
Masina Tupea stopped the small spurt, however, the Engineers went on a 7-2 run to wrap up the set.
Â
-
Set 3: MIT slowly built a 16-10 lead following a kill from junior
Alyssa Unell (Scottsdale, Ariz.). The slim margin held until a setting error by the hosts narrowed the gap to 21-19. An exchange of points ensued as another kill by Unell gave the Engineers match point at 24-21. A pair of miscues to go along with a kill by Tupea evened the score at 24. MIT thwarted the comeback attempt with a kill from sophomore
Allison Brattley (Fleetwood, Pa.) and then a block by Brattley and Unell.
