THE BASICS:

- The Lead: There is now just one unbeaten team in the NEWMAC Conference, and that honor belongs to the fifth-ranked MIT women's soccer team as the Engineers knocked off previously unbeaten Springfield, 3-0 on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Senior Karenna Groff (Weston, Mass.) got the Engineers on the board in the 11th minute when she corralled the ball that tipped off the Springfield goalkeeper's fingertips and put it in the back of the net for her sixth goal of the season.
 
- At 55:21 in the second half, first-year Natalie Barnouw (Los Angeles, Calif.) sent in a perfect corner kick that senior Maya Nielan (Danville, Calif.) was able to head in for the goal to make it a 2-0 Engineer lead.
 
- Groff sent in a pass to sophomore Meagan Rowlett (Dana Point, Calif.) who rifled a shot from about 15-yards out to give the Engineers an insurance goal and make the score 3-0.
 
- As they have been all season, the MIT defense once again did not allow its opponent much chance to mount a comeback as the Engineers held Springfield to just three shots in the game as MIT sealed the 3-0 shutout win.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- The Engineers are unbeaten in the last nine meetings against Springfield.

- Lauren Castle (Ridgefield, Conn.) earned the shutout win, making two saves in the match as she moves to 6-0 this season.

- Barnouw's assist gives her a team-leading seven this year while her 17 points also leads the Engineers.

- Rowlett notched her team-high eighth goal on the year while Groff sits just behind her with six scores on the year.  

- MIT has registered 10 shutouts this season.

UP NEXT:

- MIT heads back on the road as the Engineers will play another mid-week afternoon match on Wednesday, October 13 against Wellesley College. The game is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
