The Lead: An 11-0 run that spanned 2:12 in the fourth quarter helped the MIT women's basketball team pull away for a 61-47 victory over Rhode Island College on Wednesday night. Senior
Christina Antonakakis (Holmdel, N.J.) led all players with 28 points to go along with five assists.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- MIT jumped out to a 9-2 lead midway through the opening quarter courtesy of two layups by first-year
Kamsi Nwogu (Algonquin, Ill.) and a three-pointer and two free throws from Antonakakis. The Engineers maintained a small cushion as they ended the frame with a 24-18 lead.
- RIC opened the second stanza with a three-pointer and a jumper to come within one point. MIT replied with a three-point play from senior
Annika Sougstad (Mahtomedi, Minn.) and a layup by senior
Paula Pieper (Greenville, S.C.), increasing its margin to 19-13 at the 6:20 mark. RIC went on to outscore the Engineers, 9-3, down the stretch as a three-pointer at the halftime buzzer knotted the game at 22.
- A three-pointer by Antonakakis sparked an 11-2 run during the first half of the third quarter. RIC replied with seven unanswered points, closing the gap to 33-31 with two minutes on the clock. MIT countered with back-to-back Antonakakis treys before ending the quarter with a 39-32 lead.
- A layup and a three-pointer by first-year
Angie Choi (Cypress, Calif.) sparked the Engineers' pivotal run which put the game out of reach. MIT's margin eventually grew to 19 points on Pieper's three-pointer with 1:16 left to play.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Nwogu finished with 10 points and two steals while Sougstad registered a game and career-high 12 rebounds to go along with three steals. Senior
Kylie Gallagher (Upton, Mass.) chipped in 10 rebounds and two blocks for the Engineers.
- MIT had the upper hand in rebounds (42-38), points off turnovers (16-4), points in the paint (26-20), second-chance points (8-6), and fast break points (12-7). The Engineers shot 34.9 percent (22-of-63) from the floor, 35.0 percent (7-of-20) from three-point range, and 71.4 percent (10-of-14) from the free throw line.
- RIC led the way in bench scoring (17-7) and shot 34.5 percent (19-of-55) from the floor, 35.0 percent (7-of-20) from behind the arc, and 33.3 percent (2-of-6) at the charity stripe.
- This was the first meeting between both programs.
