The Lead: All five MIT starters reached double digits in scoring while two registered double-doubles in a 78-68 victory over UMass Dartmouth in non-conference women's basketball action on Saturday night. First-year
Kamsi Nwogu (Algonquin, Ill.) totaled a team-high 16 points and 10 rebounds while senior
Annika Sougstad (Mahtomedi, Minn.) registered 13 points as well as a career and a game-high 13 rebounds.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Â
- Trailing 10-5, a layup by senior
Christina Antonakakis (Holmdel, N.J.) sparked a 12-3 run which put MIT in front with 1:27 left in the quarter. UMass Dartmouth ended the scoring drought with two free throws but a free throw by Antonakakis with nine seconds on the clock gave the Engineers an 18-15 lead.
Â
- MIT put together a 20-6 run in the second stanza, increasing its margin to 38-21 at the 2:46 mark. The Engineers maintained their comfortable cushion down the stretch as they entered halftime with a 42-29 lead.
Â
- A 9-3 spurt during the first two minutes of the third quarter gave MIT a 19-point advantage, its largest of the night. After an exchange of possessions, the Corsairs drained two free throws, igniting a 20-7 run that narrowed the gap to 58-52 at the end of the period.
Â
- UMass Dartmouth carried the momentum into the final frame as it came within two points on two occasions, the last at 60-58 on two free throws with 6:52 left. The Engineers immediately responded with a layup by Nwogu, kicking off a string of 13 unanswered points which was capped by a jumper in the paint by senior
Paula Pieper (Greenville, S.C.) at the 3:24 mark. Despite the deficit the Corsairs continued to attack as a fast break layup made the score 76-68 with one minute to go. MIT used two free throws by Antonakakis with 28 seconds remaining to secure the victory.
Â
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Â
- Pieper tallied 10 points, five steals, and four assists while Antonakakis finished with 14 points and four assists. Senior
