Christina Antonakakis (Holmdel, N.J.) generated 40 points, five assists, and five rebounds in MIT's 98-92 overtime victory at Westfield State University in non-conference women's basketball action on Tuesday night. Her scoring performance broke the MIT record for points in game of 33 that was set by
Diane Ozelius '79 in 1978. Antonakakis tied the previous mark against Wellesley College and Babson College during the NEWMAC Tournament quarterfinals and semifinals, respectively, in 2020.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Westfield State scored the first seven points of the game and held a 10-3 lead after 3:17 elapsed. A free throw by senior
Kylie Gallagher (Upton, Mass.) on MIT's ensuing possession kicked off an 18-2 run that was capped by first-year
Elise Harvey's (Wayland, Mass.) layup with 1:59 left in the quarter. The Owls countered with eight unanswered points, narrowing the gap to 21-20 at the end of the frame.
- Westfield State carried the momentum into the second stanza as it outscored the Engineers, 30-19, and entered halftime with a 50-40 advantage.
- MIT chipped away at the deficit as a three-pointer by first-year
Sarah Berman (York, Pa.) brought it within 61-59 at the 3:04 mark of the third quarter. The Owls used two layups and a pair of free throws to create some breathing room. However, Antonakakis knocked down a three-pointer to keep the Engineers within striking distance heading into the fourth quarter.
- The early stages of the fourth quarter were somewhat balanced until a three-point play by senior
Annika Sougstad (Mahtomedi, Minn.) narrowed the gap to 75-72 with 6:13 on the clock. After two minutes of scoreless play, Westfield State put together an 8-3 burst. MIT responded with a three-pointer from Berman on its ensuing possession, followed by a jumper from senior
Paula Pieper (Greenville, S.C.), and another Berman trey that tied the score at 83 with 1:04 remaining. A series of turnovers ensued, sending the game into overtime.
- A three-point play by Antonakakis along with two free throws from Berman created a small cushion 51 seconds into the extra session. The Owls eventually tied the score at 88 on a three-pointer midway through the period. Following two more ties, the last at 92, Antonakakis buried a three-pointer with 35 seconds to go and added a free throw with seven ticks left. The Engineers capped the scoring on a layup by Gallagher right before the buzzer sounded.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Berman produced 19 points in 23 minutes of action while Gallagher tallied 12 rebounds, 11 points, and three blocks. Sougstad posted six rebounds, four assists, and two steals as Pieper contributed seven assists and six steals.
- Antonakakis tied the record for made three-point field goals in a game (eight), which she set in 2020. She also tied the record for made field goals in a game (13) that was established by Ozelius in 1976. Antonakakis broke the record three-point field goal attempts in a game (17), eclipsing the previous mark of 15 that was set by
Aparna Sud '13 in 2010.
- Both teams generated 28 points in the paint while MIT had an edge in rebounds (52-48) and bench scoring (32-24). Westfield State led the way in points off turnovers (26-10), second-chance points (19-17), and fast break points (16-15).

MIT's 15 three-pointers tied the program record that was set in 2019 while its 38 attempts surpassed the record of 30 that was also established in 2019.
- The Owls shot 40.0 percent (30-of-75) from the floor, 39.5 percent (15-of-38) from behind the arc, and 73.9 percent (17-of-23) at the charity stripe.
