The Lead: The no. 8 MIT women's soccer team tied the program record with 20 victories in a season as the Engineers took down Maine Maritime 4-0 in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday morning. With the win, MIT advances to the second round for the third straight season.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- MIT put the pressure on from the beginning hoping to breakthrough, but the Engineers couldn't get past the Mariners defense until the 37:24 mark when first-year
Natalie Barnouw (Los Angeles, Calif.) took control of a loose ball in front of the cage and fired it past
Bess MacArthur for the score.
- Senior
Karenna Groff (Weston, Mass.) made it a two-score game at 50:39 when she took a pass from sophomore
Meagan Rowlett (Dana Point, Calif.) coming down the field and hooked the ball into the corner of the net for her 11
th goal of the season.
- Just a few minutes later at 56:56 Rowlett took a crossing pass from first-year
Ashley English (Sheboygan, Wisc.) and poked it into the corner of the net to extend the MIT lead to 3-0.
- Junior
Stephanie Howe (Geneva, Ill.) sent in a beautiful corner kick to first-year
Emiko Pope (St. Louis, Mo.) at 73:41 that Pope put into the net for her first-career goal as an Engineer to put the home team up 4-0.
- As it has all season, the MIT defense held strong and did not allow the visitors to get much pressure in the MIT end as the Engineers secured the 4-0 win to advance to the second round of the tournament.
