Women's Soccer Punches Ticket to Sweet 16 With a 2-0 Win Over Brandeis

Box Score THE BASICS:

- Score: No. 8 MIT – 2, No. 20 Brandeis - 0

- Records: MIT (21-1-1), Brandeis (12-5-2)

- Location: Cambridge, Mass. (Roberts Field)

- The Lead: The eighth-ranked MIT women's soccer team is heading to the Sweet 16 for the third time in program history as the Engineers defeated Brandeis, 2-0, on Sunday afternoon. The win was the 21st of the season for MIT which is a new program record.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- Just 16 seconds into the contest, sophomore Meagan Rowlett (Dana Point, Calif.) was granted a penalty kick off a Brandeis foul and caught Judges' goalkeeper, Hannah Bassan going the opposite way as Rowlett fired the ball into the back of the net for the quick score.

- The Engineers kept the pressure on the visitors, as NEWMAC Rookie of the Year Natalie Barnouw (Los Angeles, Calif.) collected a loose ball in traffic in front of the goal and put a shot on net that Bassan got her fingertips on, but could not stop from going in, as MIT took a 2-0 lead at 7:48.

- Brandeis finally got its offense going, getting the ball into MIT territory, but of the five shots by the Judges in the first half, only one was on target.

- MIT looked to score quickly once again in the second half but the Judges' defense held firm and kept it a two-goal contest.

- The Judges offense looked to get the team back into the game in the second half, but the back line of MIT, headlined by the NEWMAC Defensive Athlete of the Year in senior Eva Anderson (Edina, Minn.) held Brandeis to just three second-half shots with only one on cage to punch the team's ticket to the Sweet 16 with the 2-0 win.
