The Lead: Nationally-ranked No. 18 MIT defeated Haverford College, 25-13, 25-14, 25-23, in the second round of the NCAA Division III Women's Volleyball Tournament on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Engineers advance to the regional final for the fifth time in program history and first since 2017.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Â
-
Set 1: MIT recorded the first four points of the match en route to a 15-1 advantage. Haverford chipped away at the deficit as a hitting error by the Engineers brought the Fords within 17-10. This was as close as it would get as MIT used an 8-3 run to wrap up the set.
Â
-
Set 2: The Engineers jumped out to a 6-1 lead and never looked back as it cruised to a 25-14 win.
Â
-
Set 3: The third set was a back-and-forth affair as there were 13 ties and five lead changes. A kill by
Dina Kosyagin gave Haverford a 7-3 lead. MIT battled back, eventually going up 15-13 following a pair of miscues. Two Engineers' errors were followed by an exchange of points until an MIT hitting error put the Fords in front, 18-17. Three ties and two lead changes ensued as a Kosyagin kill gave Haverford a 21-20 edge. The Engineers capitalized on a hitting error, back-to-back kills by senior
Annie Bryan (Kirkwood, Ohio), and a kill by junior
Lilly Edwards (Kansas City, Mo.) to reach match point. A kill by Kosyagin and an ace from
Sara Hunsberger kept the Fords alive, however, a kill by Edwards secured the win.
