The Lead: A 15-4 run during overtime helped Emmanuel College pull away for a 75-68 win over MIT in a non-conference women's basketball game on Thursday night. Senior
Kylie Gallagher (Upton, Mass.) powered the Engineers with 18 points to go along with a game and career-high 16 rebounds.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- In a back-and-forth first quarter, Emmanuel emerged with a 20-17 lead.
- MIT controlled the action in the second stanza as it outscored the Saints, 17-2, and held a 34-22 advantage at halftime.
- Emmanuel battled back in the third quarter as a put-back with 20 seconds left gave it a 42-41 edge.
- The Saints carried the momentum into the fourth quarter as they outscored the Engineers, 9-3, during the first 1:54. Sparked by a fast break layup by Gallagher, MIT put together a 14-5 run as a free throw by senior
Annika Sougstad (Mahtomedi, Minn.) gave the Engineers a 58-56 lead with six seconds left. A foul put Emmanuel at the charity stripe where it hit both shots and sent the game into overtime.
- The Saints opened the extra session with a three-point play, giving them a lead they would not relinquish and igniting their pivotal 15-4 run that spanned four minutes. A put-back by first-year
Kamsi Nwogu (Algonquin, Ill.) along with a three-pointer from senior
Christina Antonakakis (Holmdel, N.J.) narrowed the gap to 73-67 with 43 seconds remaining. Emmanuel secured the victory by draining two free throws almost 20 seconds later. Sougstad provided the final point on free throw with less than one second left.
