The Lead: The MIT water polo got three goals from senior
John Steele (old, Greenwich, Conn.), however, the Engineers fell in the opening round of the Northeast Water Polo Conference Championships to St. Francis Brooklyn, 12-5, on Friday evening in Princeton, N.J.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Â
- The Terriers scored the first two goals of the opening quarter before senior
Miller Geschke (Los, Altos, Calif.) scored at 2:04 to make it a one-score match, but with 49 seconds remaining in the first,
Paul Armingol scored to give SFB a 3-1 advantage.
Â
- St. Francis once again scored the first two goals of the quarter before a Steele goal stopped the Terriers three-goal run and made the score 5-2.
Â
- A five-goal run between the third and fourth quarters by the Terriers made it a 10-2 match, but MIT got three straight goals from Steele and classmate
Kaden DiMarco (Eugene, Ore.) to cut the deficit in half. That would be as close as the Engineers came as SFB scored twice more to take the match 12-5.
Â
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Â
- Steele led MIT with three goals in the game and now has 32 on the year.
Â
- With his goal, Geschke now has 72 this year which is tied for the fifth-most in a single season in program history. Â
