Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

ELITE! Women's Soccer Advances to Elite 8 With a Thrilling 2-1 Win Over Carnegie Mellon in OT

THE BASICS:

- Score: No. 8 MIT – 2, No. 15 Carnegie Mellon – 1 (OT)

- Records: MIT (22-1-1), Carnegie Mellon (13-6-1)

- Location: Cambridge, Mass. (Roberts Field)

- The Lead: With a trip to the Elite Eight on the line, the eighth-ranked MIT women's soccer team and 15th-ranked Carnegie Mellon needed more than 90 minutes to decide who would be playing tomorrow afternoon, and it was first-year Natalie Barnouw (Los Angeles, Calif.) who scored the game-winning goal in overtime to send the Engineers to the first Elite Eight in program history.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- The Engineers controlled the play for the first 10 minutes of action, putting three shots on net which were all saved by Tartans keeper Carolyn Botz, but the pace settled down and the teams headed into the halftime break scoreless.

- It would not remain scoreless for long as first-year Mia Sedgwick (Wilmette, Ill.) corralled the loose ball off a corner kick from senior Karenna Groff (Weston, Mass.) and placed a shot into the corner of the net at 47:21 to put the Engineers in the lead.

- The visitors tied the match in the 68th minute when Alex Adams got the ball from the MIT defense and scored on an open goal.

- Senior Maya Nielan (Danville, Calif.) had an excellent opportunity to end the game at 85:44 but her shot went just wide of the goal, and with less than 20 seconds remaining in regulation, a shot by first-year Meagan Rowlett (Dana Point, Calif) just missed winning the game by inches as the ball clanged off the post and the teams went into overtime tied at one.

- After a Carnegie Mellon foul, Nielan stepped up for the free kick opportunity and found an open Barnouw who knocked the ball into the back of the net at 95:13 to send MIT into the Elite Eight with the 2-1 victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Sedgwick registered her sixth goal of the season while Barnouw notched her ninth of the year.

- Junior Ava Gillikin (Flemington, N.J.) earned her eighth win of the year in goal.

- MIT outshot CMU 16-4 and took six corner kicks while holding the visitors to none during the game.

UP NEXT:

- The Engineers will take on Wesleyan University, tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. on Roberts Field with a trip to the Final Four on the line.
