The Lead: The MIT water polo team fell to Iona College, 11-7 on Sunday morning on the final day of the NWPC Championships.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Goals from seniors
Kyle Sandell (Mountain View, Calif.) and
John Steele (Old Greenwich, Conn.) gave the Engineers a 2-0 lead after quarter one, but two second-quarter goals from the Gaels tied the match heading into the halftime break.
- A goal from Michael Feeley put Iona up 3-2, but MIT got back-to-back goals from Steele and
Kaden DiMarco (Eugene, Ore.) to regain the lead at 4-3.
- The teams then exchanged goals and Iona regained a one-goal advantage at 6-5 heading into the final quarter of action.
- DiMarco tied the match with a goal at 6:35 in the fourth before back-to-back Iona goals gave them an 8-6 lead. DiMarco notched another goal to bring MIT back to within one, but the Gales concluded the match on a 3-0 run to take a 11-7 win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- DiMarco led MIT with four goals in the match.
- MIT went 1-4 on the powerplay.
