The Lead: Framingham State University outscored MIT, 12-2, during the final 3:14 of regulation to secure a 68-52 victory in a non-conference women's basketball game on Tuesday night. Senior
Christina Antonakakis (Holmdel, N.J.) paced the Engineers with 14 points.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Â
- The Rams gradually built a 14-8 lead at the 3:45 mark of the opening quarter. A three-pointer by Antonakakis on MIT's next possession kicked off a 7-2 spurt which brought the Engineers within one (16-15) at the end of the frame.
Â
- MIT carried the momentum into the second stanza as it eventually went up 25-20 courtesy of first-year
Sarah Berman's (York, Pa.) trey with 4:04 on the clock. Framingham State replied with a 10-2 run, entering halftime with a 30-27 edge.
Â
- The Rams maintained their small cushion as the Engineers narrowed the gap to four on three occasions, the last at 40-36 on a jumper by senior
Paula Pieper (Greenville, S.C.) at the 4:19 mark. Framingham State responded with eight unanswered points to wrap up the third quarter.
Â
- Despite the deficit MIT continued to attack, narrowing the gap to 56-50 courtesy of a layup by first-year
Kamsi Nwogu (Algonquin, Ill.) with 3:44 remaining. The Rams knocked down a three-pointer on their ensuing possession; however, two free throws by Antonakakis with 2:43 on the clock kept MIT within striking distance. Framingham State quickly countered with another trey as it rattled off nine straight points down the stretch, helping the Rams secure the victory.
