Radler Hat Trick Leads No. 20 MIT Past Smith

Engineers Open NEWMAC Play With an 8-1 Home Win Over the Pioneers

THE BASICS:
 
- Score: No. 20 MIT 8, Smith College 1
 
- Records: MIT (4-2, 1-0 NEWMAC); Smith (1-5, 0-1 NEWMAC)
 
- Location: Cambridge, Mass. (Jack Barry Field)
 
- The Lead: Led by a hat trick from junior Erica Radler (Wayne, N.J.), No. 20 MIT opened NEWMAC play with an 8-1 home win over Smith College on Saturday afternoon.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
 
- The Engineers jumped on the board just 7:12 into the game as Radler put home a crossing pass from junior Paige Forester (Glencoe, Ill.) for the 1-0 advantage. Forester found the net herself just over three minutes later as the picked off a pass and blasted in a shot from the top of the circle for her sixth goal of the season.
 
- Senior Laura Chen (Califon, N.J.) posted her second goal of the season as she scored off a penalty corner, followed by senior Emily Genevriere (San Jose, Calif.) closing out the first quarter with her first goal of the year. Radler closed the first half scoring with 1:16 remaining in the second quarter and sent MIT into the break up 5-0.
 
- Smith got on the board just 2:31 into the third quarter as Karlie Guimond scored off a penalty corner after a pass from Laura Dreher to make it a 5-1 margin.
 
- Forester notched an unassisted tally late in the third, followed by the second goal of the game by Chen and the completion of Radler's hat trick to account for the 8-1 final.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
 
- For the Engineers, Radler finished with three goals to go along with two each from Chen and Forester, as well as a pair of assists by both Forester and sophomore Jessie Jin (Whippany, N.J.).
 
- Senior Juliana Strother (Mequon, Wis.) earned the win with a scoreless first half before first-year Anna Duncan (St. Louis, Mo.) played the second half for the Engineers. Channy Cornell had three saves in the loss for the Pioneers, followed by Taylor Wells who played the fourth quarter.
 
- MIT held a slight 8-6 edge in penalty corner opportunities while outshooting by the Pioneers by a 14-3 margin.
 
UP NEXT:
 
- MIT is back in action on Wednesday, September 22nd as the Engineers travel to No. 15 Amherst College for a 7 p.m. start.
