Women’s Volleyball Defeats Mount Holyoke and Salve Regina

- The Lead: The MIT women's volleyball team swept NEWMAC foe Mount Holyoke College, 25-11, 25-15, 25-10, and battled Salve Regina University for a 25-20, 20-25, 26-24, 25-16 victory in a pair of matches on Saturday.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED – MATCH ONE vs Mount Holyoke:
 
- Set 1: Trailing 4-3, a kill by sophomore Ashley Margetts (Brownsburg, Ind.) kicked of a 7-3 run as MIT won the set, 25-11.
 
- Set 2: Following a back-and-forth start to the set, the Engineers built a 9-6 edge after an ace by Margetts. Mount Holyoke came within one point on two occasions, the last at 10-9. Strong serving from first-year Adrina Tang (Monte Sereno, Calif.), which featured three aces, helped MIT pull away for a 25-15 victory.
 
- Set 3: The Engineers jumped out to a 10-1 lead as strong serving by sophomore Consecrata Rozario (Cary, N.C.) produced three of her four aces of the match. MIT went on to cruise to a 25-10 win.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
 
- Rozario recorded 10 kills, a .833 hitting performance, and four aces while senior Hannah Grupe (Oakwood, Ohio) posted nine kills and a .538 hitting effort. Graduate student Emily Condon (Orange, Calif.) bolstered the Engineers' attack with eight kills.
 
- Tang finished with 27 assists and four aces as sophomore Amy Hu (College Station, Texas) dished out 16 assists.
 
- First-year Ottavia Personeni (Bethesda, Md.) led all players with nine digs while Margetts chipped in five of her own.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED – MATCH TWO vs. Salve Regina:
 
- Set 1: Trailing 13-10, a hitting error by Salve Regina sparked an 8-2 spurt that put MIT in front. The Seahawks quickly tied the score at 18, but a kill by senior Annie Bryan (Kirkwood, Mo.) kicked off a 7-2 set-ending run.
 
- Set 2: The first half of the set was closely played as there were eight ties and four lead changes. Salve Regina rattled off five straight points to take an 18-14 lead. The Seahawks maintained the small cushion as they held on for a 25-20 win.
 
- Set 3: Salve Regina carried the momentum into the third set as it jumped out to a 7-2 lead. The Engineers battled back, tying the score at 11 courtesy of a block by first-year Ella Gragg (Morganton, N.C.) and junior Alyssa Unell (Scottsdale, Ariz.). The Seahawks inched out to a 16-13 lead but MIT claimed four of the next five points. An exchange of points ensued as a kill by junior Lilly Edwards (Kansas City, Mo.) gave the Engineers set point at 24-23. Salve Regina extended the frame with a kill but MIT replied with a kill from Gragg and an ace by Personeni to capture the win.
 
- Set 4: The Engineers gradually established a 10-4 lead; however, the Seahawks closed the gap to 11-10. MIT responded by putting together a 14-6 run to wrap up the match.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
 
- Gragg led all players with 16 kills, followed by 12 from Edwards and sophomore Allison Brattley (Fleetwood, Pa.), and 10 by Bryan.
 
- Personeni amassed a match-high 23 digs as sophomore Emily Cheng (Sunnyvale, Calif.) totaled 44 assists, and 16 digs. Unell generated a match-high five blocks.
 
- This was the second meeting between both programs and MIT's first victory as Salve Regina defeated the Engineers in five sets when the team first met in 2010.
