The Lead: The MIT women's volleyball team kicked off the 2021 season by sweeping host Gordon College, 25-18, 25-20, 25-19, on Friday to open the Gordon Invitational. Sophomore
Allison Brattley (Fleetwood, Pa.) paced the Engineers' balanced attack with a match-high 10 kills and a .412 hitting performance as junior
Emma Suh (Santa Monica, Calif.) led all players with 15 digs to go along with two aces.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
-
Set 1: MIT raced out to an 8-1 lead, but Gordon narrowed the gap to 11-6. Two errors and a kill by Brattley gave the Engineers some breathing room, however, the Fighting Scots battled back as they came within two (19-17). MIT replied with a 6-1 spurt to close out the set.
-
Set 2: The second set was closely played as Gordon gradually trimmed the Engineers' lead to 18-17. The visitors went on to score seven of the next 10 points with Suh's ace clinching the win.
-
Set 3: The Fighting Scots recorded the first six points and maintained a small cushion throughout the third set. MIT chipped away at the deficit as a hitting error gave it a 16-15 edge, however, a hitting miscue quickly evened the score. The Engineers responded with a block by junior
Lilly Edwards (Kansas City, Mo.) and sophomore
Consecrata Rozario (Cary, N.C.) which sparked a 9-3 run to end the match.
