Women’s Volleyball Captures Gordon Invitational Title

- The Lead: The MIT women's volleyball team swept Bard College (25-17, 25-14, 25-11) and New England College (25-13, 25-14, 25-9), to capture the Gordon College Invitational title on Saturday. This was the 10th time in 15 appearances at the tournament the Engineers have come away with a first-place finish. Sophomore Allison Brattley (Fleetwood, Pa.) represented MIT on the All-Tournament Team.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED – MATCH ONE vs. Bard:
 
- Set 1: MIT inched out to a 10-4 lead following an ace by first-year Ottavia Personeni (Bethesda, Md.). The Engineers maintained a small cushion before closing out the set with a 7-2 spurt.
 
- Set 2: Holding a three-point lead, a trio of hitting errors increased MIT's advantage to 12-6. Bard battled back, closing the gap to 13-10. However, a kill from senior Julia Caravias (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) ignited a 12-4 set-ending run.
 
- Set 3: Trailing 5-4, a serving error sparked a 21-6 run which clinched the match for the Engineers.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
 
- Caravias tallied a career and match-high 11 kills while hitting .350 and earning three aces. Brattley contributed six kills and hit .444 in two sets of action.
 
- First-year Adrina Tang (Monte Sereno, Calif.) dished out 17 assists, followed by nine from sophomore Emily Cheng (Sunnyvale, Calif.), and seven from sophomore Amy Hu (College Station, Texas).
 
- Junior Emma Suh (Santa Monica, Calif.) led all players with a career-high 15 digs.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED – MATCH TWO vs. New England College:
 
- Set 1: A tight start to the match saw MIT hold a 9-8 edge. A kill by junior Lilly Edwards (Kansas City, Mo.) led to a string of four straight points as the Engineers went on to capture a 25-13 win.
 
- Set 2: New England College inched out to a 7-4 lead; however, a setting error kicked off a stretch of 11 unanswered points by MIT. The Engineers' advantage grew to 20-8 before securing a 25-14 victory.
 
- Set 3: MIT jumped out to a 9-2 lead and never looked back as it cruised to a 25-9 win.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
 
- Sophomore Ashley Margetts (Brownsburg, Ind.) paced the Engineers' balanced attack with six kills. Classmate Consecrata Rozario (Cary, N.C.) registered five kills on five attempts and added three blocks.
 
- Cheng distributed 23 assists while junior Alyssa Unell (Scottsdale, Ariz.) and first-year Lauren Keller (Albuquerque, N.M.) both posted three aces.
 
- Suh notched six digs followed by five from senior Margaret Wang (Rockville, Md.). Edwards rounded out the defense with four blocks.
 
- This was the first meeting between both programs.

- MIT returns to action on Tuesday, Sept. 7 when it travels to Suffolk University for a 6:00 p.m. start.
