Memorial Service Announced for Former Director of Athletics Royce Flippin

Flippin Served as the Director of Athletics at MIT from 1980-1992

Former MIT director of athletics Royce Flippin recently passed away at his home in East Brunswick, N.J. at the age of 87.
 
Flippin, a 1956 graduate of Princeton University, also served as their director of athletics after a football career for the Tigers that saw him earn All-Ivy honors as a tailback. He was also drafted by Washington in the 1956 NFL Draft as the team took him in the 27th round.
 
At MIT, he was the director of athletics for 12 years from 1980-1992 while serving five years on the NCAA Executive Committee and one year as President of the ECAC. After his time as the director of athletics, he moved to New York City to work in MIT's Development Office. Flippin was inducted into the ECAC Hall of Fame in 2018 for his dedication to collegiate athletics over his career as a student-athlete and athletics administrator. 
 
For those who are interested in further celebrating the life and career of Royce, there is a memorial service that will be held on Saturday, October 9th in Princeton, N.J. The event will be held at the Cap and Gown Club, which is located at 61 Prospect Avenue in Princeton. The outdoor celebration will begin at 1 p.m. and will include a memorial service, followed by a sharing of remembrances of Royce.

Please note that the celebration will be held outside, with no Covid-19 vaccination required. However, anyone who wants to enter the clubhouse to use the restroom, etc., will need to show their vaccine card or similar proof of vaccination. See Cap and Gown guidelines for more information.
