The Lead: As time expired in the third quarter,
Bailey Lynch poked in a loose ball to give the University of New England a lead it would not relinquish as it held on for a 1-0 victory over the nationally-ranked No. 16 MIT field hockey team on Saturday.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Â
- MIT controlled the action in the first quarter as it outshot the Nor'easters, 7-1, and had a 3-0 edge in penalty corners.
Â
- The Engineers carried the momentum into the second stanza but UNE generated several dangerous possessions, eventually resulting in a penalty corner in the 19
th minute. MIT continued to attack but the deadlock held heading into halftime.
Â
- In a balanced third quarter, the Nor'easters ended the stalemate when they earned their third penalty corner of the frame, which came with 10 seconds left. After the ball was inserted by
Kate Lindmark, a scramble ensued and then Lynch tapped in what proved to be the game-winning goal at the far post.
Â
- MIT once again had the upper hand in the fourth quarter as it held advantages in shots (9-2) and penalty corners (8-5), but the UNE defense was impenetrable.
Â
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Â
- The Engineers led the way in shots (25-9), shots on goal (10-3), and penalty corners (16-10).
Â
- In net,
Juliana Strother (Mequon, Wis.) made two saves for MIT while
Lindsay Pych collected 10 saves for UNE.
Â
- This was the Nor'easters' first win over the Engineers since 2016. MIT had won the last three meetings and leads the all-time series, 6-4.
Â
UP NEXT:
