Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Late Goal Lifts No. 16 MIT to 2-1 Win Over Endicott

THE BASICS:

- Score: No. 16 MIT 2, Endicott College 1

- Records: MIT (2-1); Endicott (1-1)

- Location: Cambridge, Mass. (Jack Barry Field)

- The Lead: MIT junior Liberty Ladd (Falmouth, Maine) found the back of the net with 2:23 remaining in regulation and the Engineers fought off an Endicott College penalty corner during the final four seconds to hold on for a 2-1 non-conference field hockey victory on Tuesday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- Endicott possessed the ball for the majority of the opening frame but neither side earned a penalty corner or generated a shot.

- The last six minutes of the second quarter featured the first attempts on net by both teams. Following MIT's second penalty corner of the night, a series of passes around the arc sent the ball to senior Lauren Chen (Califon, N.J.) at the near post. She quickly found sophomore Jessie Jin (Whippany, N.J.) in the middle of the arc for her first intercollegiate goal in the 27th minute.

- Following a balanced but scoreless third quarter, the Gulls ended the shutout in the 52nd minute. The recipients of a penalty corner while having a player advantage, senior Sydney Poulin put a shot on net but it was stopped by senior goalie Juliana Strother (Mequon, Wis.). Poulin corralled the rebound at the top of the arc and sent a blast past Strother to tie the game.

- The Engineers replied by tallying five shots on goal and two penalty corners until recording the game-winner with 2:23 on the clock. A shot by Chen was blocked but junior Paige Forester (Glencoe, Ill.) collected the rebound and found Liberty who deflected the ball from the middle of the arc to the near post.

- Endicott almost sent the game into overtime after earning a penalty corner with 4.2 seconds left. From the far side, Poulin hit the ball through the arc but Olivia Lampasona couldn't connect at the near post, with ball going past the endline as time expired.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- MIT ended the night with advantages in shots (12-9), shots on goal (9-5), and penalty corners (8-3).

- Strother finished with four saves while Taylor Farrin made seven saves for the Gulls.
