Rowlett's Goals Lifts No. 14 MIT to a 1-0 Win over Wellesley

THE BASICS:

- Score: MIT - 1, Wellesley - 0

- Records: No. 14 MIT (11-3-1, 6-0-0 NEWMAC), Wellesley (5-6-1, 0-5-1)

- Location: Cambridge, Mass. (Roberts Field)

- The Lead: Junior Meagan Rowlett (Dana Point, Calif.) scored her team-leading seventh goal of the season to propel the 14th-ranked MIT women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Wellesley College on Tuesday afternoon on Roberts Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- It was a defensive battle in the match's first 45 minutes of play with the teams combining for just five shots. Senior Ava Gillikin (Flemington, N.J.) turned away both shots from the Blue and Sascha Fleesler stopped a Rowlett shot early in the half.

- MIT picked up the offensive pressure in the second half with five shots in the first 10 minutes of play.

- The offense for the Engineers finally broke through when graduate student Karenna Groff (Weston, Mass.) sent a pass to Rowlett on the far side of the field that Rowlett lifted in the air and right under the crossbar at 61:04.

- Wellesley could not generate any offense against the Engineer defense as MIT notched its ninth shutout victory of the season.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Rowlett and Groff are tied for the team lead with 17 points. Rowlett leads the way with seven goals and Groff has a team-high five assists.

- Gillikin made two saves in the game to earn her fourth win.

- The Engineers held the advantage in shots (15-3), shots on goal (7-2), and corner kicks (4-3).
