The Lead: Just over a minute after Roger Williams University tied the game, senior
Paige Forester (Glencoe, Ill.) buried the game-winning goal with 4:18 remaining in regulation, lifting No. 12 MIT to a 3-2 victory in non-conference field hockey action on Wednesday night. Senior
Liberty Ladd (Falmouth, Maine) scored twice while Forester posted one goal and one assist.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Â
- Roger Williams took the early lead when it converted a penalty stroke after one minute expired, but MIT replied with the equalizer in the 10
th minute. A hit by Forester inside the top of the arc bounced off a defender's stick and was collected by Ladd. With her back to goalie
Jill Haudenshield, she quickly tapped the ball between Haudenshield's legs and into the cage.
Â
- With a two-player advantage, the Engineers went up 2-1 in the 23
rd minute. On a penalty corner, sophomore
Ashley Lederman (Villanova, Pa.) sent a pass from the top of the arc to Forester on the far side. Forester found Ladd just beyond the far post, who then quickly spun around and one-timed it underneath Haudenshield.
Â
- Although MIT had the upper hand in shots (4-0) and penalty corners (2-0) during the third quarter, it could not increase its lead.
Â
- Following a flurry of penalty corners and shots midway through the fourth quarter, the Hawks ended the stalemate with 5:32 left to play. On a penalty corner, senior goalie
Kiely Smiga-McManus (Etna, N.H.) made a save with her blocker at the far post. The rebound was deflected by RWU to the near side but it was passed back to the near post.
Morgan Foley redirected the ball to
Brooklyn Cenatiempo who hit it to the far post.
Â
- The Hawks almost reclaimed the lead once action resumed. A shot by the hosts was blocked right in front of Smiga-McManus and then first-year
Bailey McIntyre (Concord, Mass.) cleared out the ball. RWU came up with an interception but it couldn't control the bouncing ball, allowing sophomore
Avani Narula (Malvern, Pa.) to gain possession and end the threat. After a brief exchange of possessions at midfield, Narula once again collected a loose ball along the far side and then found McIntyre at the midfield circle. She carried the ball up the field before finding sophomore
Alice Zehner (Gladwyne, Pa.) on the near side of the field. Zehner sent a bouncing pass to Forester in the middle of the arc, who unleashed a blast past Haudenshield's blocker for the game-winner.
