- The Lead: On the final game of a four-game MIT homestand, the Engineers dropped a 17-0 final to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy on Saturday afternoon in NEWMAC play. Â

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- In a scoreless first half, the Engineers dominated the time of possession as MIT had the ball for 19:44 compared to 10:16 for the Mariners. MIT also had an 8-3 advantage in first downs and outgained USMMA in total offensive yards by a 104-51 total.

- In the second quarter, sophomore punter
Nico Bulhof (Bryan, Texas) booted a 74-yard punt that was downed at the one-yard line. The kick was the longest punt in MIT history, the longest in the NEWMAC this season and the third-longest in the nation this year.

- The Mariners got on the scoreboard on their opening drive of the second half as they drove 75 yards in 15 plays, capped by an eight-yard rush up the middle by
Matthew Savard to make it a 7-0 score.

- After an MIT three and out on the next drive, USMMA pushed the lead to 14-0 as
Jeremiah Wang found an open
Talsen Smith from 11 yards out in the corner of the end zone. USMMA kept up the offensive pressure on its next drive as well as they moved into the red zone on a 36-yard completion by Wang to Smith.
Jackson Tinkis converted a 25-yard field goal to end the drive as the game headed to the fourth quarter at 17-0.

- In the opening five minutes of the fourth, MIT drove deep into USMMA territory and on fourth down, first-year
Chase Harmon (West Linn, Ore.) nearly found senior
Dennis Gastel (Lincoln, R.I.) in the end zone before the ball was knocked away by
Payton Gourley. The two teams were scoreless the rest of the way as the Mariners came away with the 17-0 final.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Senior
Jay Theriault (Boxford, Mass.) led the MIT rushing attached with 57 yards, while Harmon completed 11 passes for 78 yards. For USMMA,
Max Michaels was the top rusher with 65 yards to go along with 91 yards passing and one touchdown from Wang.

- Defensively, graduate student
Paul Calvetti (Ridgewood, N.J.) led all tacklers with 17 stops, while Thomas Joyce had nine tackles on the day. USMMA had five sacks for 32 yards, with four of those coming from
C.J. Mustain as he had five tackles for loss in total.
